Today we see these males and females that choose to transform into the opposite sex without having to “hide” it like they used to. The transition from Bruce Jenner to Caitlyn is a popular one that we see today because more and more people are becoming aware that transsexualism really does exist, especially because of Caitlyn’s celebrity status. The hype on Caitlyn Jenner’s transition has dimmed since her interview with Diane Sawyer and her Vanity Fair cover, but on September 25th it is legally documented that she is Caitlyn and a woman. Caitlyn is placed on a pedestal by her popularity on the Kardashians and her being an Olympic winner, and it seems unfair to the Trans community because of how Caitlyn Jenner knows so little. Her status also has helped her move through this process, not smoothly, but not as bumpy as most in the Trans or gender minority community. Laverne Cox another celebrity, who has become another face of the Trans community, lived in Alabama and she didn’t have the support of family like Jenner. She was bullied in school for being different and so pressured into being ‘normal’ that she tried to commit suicide (Breen 2014).…

Teich being a transgender men mentions in his book that the process of coming out is critical. I have seen through Sarah what it means to be a transgender women and how society forces people to suppress their gender identity. But like sexual fluidity it hard for me to accept the fact that human beings are complex and they are many factors that drive us to become who we are. But again I believe that by realizing that there is diversity in all aspects of life we become acceptive of those we considered different because of the exposure to new ideas.…

These roles are constructed by society and through social interactions. Slowly, we can determine which of our behavior receives positive sanctions and we begin to conform to those gender roles. In Spencer Cahill’s “Fashioning Gender Identity,” he explains that adults treat babies differently based on their sex, starting from the earliest days of infancy. This is the beginning of an identity that children begin to develop and eventually goes on to become a sex-class. By associating emotions, attitudes, and even colors with a specific gender, children learn that there are two different types of people.…

I was born, given a name as well as dressed as a girl since the day I came from my mother’s womb; that is, I am female and identify myself as a woman. Thus far, my family, friends, and whoever gets acquainted with me obviously see me and treat me as I am a woman. In her article, Lorber maintains, “Children 's relationships with same-gendered and different-gendered caretakers structure their self-identifications and personalities. Through cognitive development, children extract and apply to their own actions the appropriate behavior for those who belong in their own gender, as well as race, religion, ethnic group, and social class, rejecting what is not appropriate” (Lorber 94). Transgender Transgender is not a choice or a phase it is a consistent gender identity that as a society we need to learn to accept. Transgender means that you do not identify your gender as the sex that you were assigned to at birth. Transgender people have the hardest time being accepted by their own families and loved ones, which really presents a problem in the transgender community. In recent studies showed that 75% of transgender individuals have experienced significant rejection from their families which brings up the issues of why so many families of a transgender have a hard time accepting the reality at hand and some never do. Being accepted in today’s society is so difficult because as humans, we are so judgmental, so I can only…

As they state, “The newborn initially depends on others to do its gender, and they come through in many different ways, not just as individuals but as part of socially structured communities that link individuals to social institutions and cultural ideologies”. Essentially, children are molded into the gender that their parents choose. Since kids are young they are not smart enough to know that they are abiding to the gender that has been given to them. When we are born we are immediately brought into this human-created institution. Instead of uniting us, gender as a structure does a better job at hindering us. Our parents begin dressing us in either pink or blue clothes, buying us either dolls or dinosaurs, setting expectations of how we dress, act and play based upon what gender we were assigned. However, the concept of gender as a social institution also gives us hope that we can change what is acceptable as either male or female and as time goes on we will see more and more change about how we define…
