Bruce Jenner Persuasive Speech

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner was successful in becoming Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year. She wins this award after also recently winning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award given at the ESPYs. Yet, in my opinion I strongly do not support Glamour giving Caitlyn this award. I believe what Caitlyn has done, coming out and being one of the most publicly recognizable transgender person in the world, is immensely courageous, but I do not see what Caitlyn has done that many others have not. For example, Union College welcomed actress, Laverne Cox, whom is most notably known because of her transition from being born a male to appearing and recognizing as a female. I am not saying Laverne Cox should have won the award over Jenner, but each day, individuals make the same courageous decision to confess their transition and because of their “insignificance” in the national media they are not considered for the award. It is also very important to also note that Jenner has not even been a woman a year. I disagree with the article as it sites that “Jenner cannot be a woman because- kid, close your eyes- he has a penis,” but I do agree when the journalist Nicole Russell states “[b]y choosing Jenner as woman of the year, Glamour endorses the idea that men are better at being women than [women] are” (). The gender binary plagues our culture, that is girls only have vaginas and boys have penises. Biologically, Jenner is male however, gender is societally constructed and the award definition of a woman probably does not specify what constitutes a female thus I believe she is eligible to have won the award, but I do not believe that she deserved such an award and I believe she received it because of her she posses elite, upper-class, white, public
