Bruce Fishkin Scholarship Analysis

Being a member of the board of a scholarship committee for need-based awards does not come with simple decisions. People that work for this committee have to think about each student suffering from financial problems, along with those who stand out against the others. Having the opportunity to win up to full-tuition for college is an amazing opportunity for many students across America and if in twenty years I had the choice to award the 17-year-old me the Bruce Fishkin Scholarship, I most definitely would. I believe I greatly qualify for this life-changing award. This amount of money I could potentially earn will not only give me less stress about paying off student-loans, but will allow me to excel in my college work. My entire life, both my parents have held jobs that only pay commission. My mom is a real estate agent and …show more content…
My parents are home all throughout the day just waiting for their next client to call, which isn’t very often, but neither parent has stepped up to get a new job so our family could be supported. The housing market has gone extremely downhill in the past ten years, so my mother’s job does not call for much profit. My family has needed food stamps, I get free lunch at school and there has been a time where I did not have health insurance. College is not the first thing my family and I have to worry about. With not enough money to pay for the taxes, the mortgage or even the food, a scholarship such as the one Bruce Fishkin awards could finally take some weight off my shoulders. Without any scholarships or enough financial aid, I will have to work my entire college career. Although I do not have a problem with keeping a job, I truly don’t believe I could balance many hours of employment and an overload of academic work. My junior year of high school, I worked around thirty-five hours per week and I was not able to focus on my school work. This is shown in my report card for junior

In twenty years, as a board member of a scholarship selection committee, I would award the 17-year-old me a scholarship not because I am simply answering the prompt in my favor, but because I know that the 17-year-old me's dream is to go to college to gain a higher education and has made learning a high priority since elementary school. The 17-year-old me is determined, hard-working, and understands the struggle of having little money, so I would know that the scholarship would not go to waste; she would use it so that her parents can ease their worry about how she is going to go to college, since they are not able to make any contributions. Knowing that her family earns little income, she has spent most of her high school years dedicating her time to her schoolwork, hoping that she would be qualified to earn scholarships during her senior year. During the other majority of her time, she has volunteered for over 300 hours at various locations and participating in school clubs and activities.…

I feel like I am a good candidate for this scholarship because, as a senior, any and all money earned and received will help me ease the burden of attending college. My goal throughout my whole childhood was to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of my dreams; however, as time has gone on and I have matured I have come to the realization that, that dream is not as achievable as I once believed it to be. I have worked hard, inside and outside of the classroom, making the grades and creating the resume that colleges are looking for, and in response I have been offered tuition waivers. Which ultimately means I am still responsible for paying for my books, room and board, part of the tuition cost, and mandatory fees.…

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. However, in my case, living in a two parent household is strange to hear about to my peers. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

I found several scholarships on http://www.dosomething.org, which is a website dedicated to social change, that can be applied to in exchange for participating in various social causes. Some of the options available in exchange for these scholarships are recycling1, helping friends and family quit smoking2, or even just making a card for someone in your community to show your appreciation3. There are several ways I intend on cutting the costs of college expenses. One way is attending community college instead of a university to attain my associate’s degree. I am also living in my parent’s home as I work towards my associate’s and will possibly live with them when I work on my bachelor’s degree, depending on if I attend The Ohio State University…
