Brownsville Academy High School: A Case Study

The agency that I am currently interning at is Brownsville Academy High School. Brownsville Academy is a specialized transfer high school geared towards 17 through 21-year-old students that were not successful in traditional high school settings. General education and students with individualized educational plans are accepted into the institution if they fulfill specified requirements. Per www.brownsvilleacademy.com (2014), general education students need 44 credits, to pass state regulated tests called Regents Exams, to complete a student portfolio, gain and fulfill a paid internship, to complete 30 hours of community service per school year, and to complete college courses to gain their high school diploma. At Brownsville Academy, the social need that is addressed is adequate education. The staff and administration at Brownville Academy also attempt to provide support to the scholars by providing parental coordination, counseling services, social services, college preparation, mentorship, and liase with other agencies for additional services that students …show more content…
Per the New York State Education Department (NYSED, 2009), Section 3205 – Title IV, Article 65, Part 1 it specifies that in each school district of New York State, each minor from the ages of six through 16 shall attend upon full time instruction. The NYS law is further backed by the New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) Parents’ Guide to New York State Child Abuse and Neglect Laws (2003); The guide states that educational neglect is the failure to enroll a school aged child in a learning institution or a home school program, refusal to engage in remedial services without suitable reasoning, and failure to respond to inquiries regarding
