It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

    Bates Motel Argument

What draws me to Bates is it’s name. To be blunt, I would have never known about the institution. Not because I didn’t want to, but because no one around me ever mentioned it. Around the same time I started taking an interest to academics I was watching various shows, one being “Bates Motel”. Coincidentally the following month my counselor put up a poster with just the name of the college “Bates”.…

The Issue Regarding 348 Ride Many parents have been coaxed by the university into believing that students always will have a safe way to get home after a long night at the library or a night spent on the strip. Little do they know, 348 Ride which is supposed to be a reliable source of transportation isn’t the slightest bit reliable. Students get hung up on, yelled at or flat out ignored by these drivers hired by the university to come pick students up and get them to where they need to be. As more students ride 348-RIDE, more complaints arise about the safe ride that they are promised.…

Brown is a place where students have the freedom to grow, learn about themselves, and enjoy life. In all my years of school there was always someone looking over my shoulder, interjecting their opinions, or spoonfeeding me the answers. I want my college education to be my own. Taking ownership of my education is a large responsibility, but I am mature enough to handle the challenge. The collaborative atmosphere of Brown, where students work with, instead of against, one another, will give me the guidance and support I need to figure out the best educational path for myself.…

What motivated me to become a GCU student was my mother, she pushed me to enroll into online schooling I did not plane on attending college until 2018. After high school, I wanted to join the work force for a year then further my education later in life but my mother had better plans for me and I’m very thankful for her pushing me to start school. Furthermore, I find motivation very important when it comes to a student being successful, yes, a student can push and motivate themselves, never the less, self-motivation is very important, however, everyone needs an extra push students lack self-confidence when they do not have anyone by their side giving them motivation everyone needs. Motivation is the desire that makes people want to succeed…

As the illustrious John Locke once stated, the human mind at birth is a tabula rasa upon which experience imprints knowledge. It was not until a point in my late childhood that I learned that my grandmother had been suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis ever since I was a little girl. On one particular morning, my grandmother was not able to get up from her bedside. Her joints had become unprecedentedly inflamed, causing her extraordinary pain. It seemed as if she had been temporarily paralyzed as nothing but a tear came down her cheek.…

There’s nothing like meeting an international student for the first time. You remember how it is to interact/communicate with them for the first time and as time goes on you get to see a first hand account of the progress that is being made throughout the year(s). I had an amazing opportunity that opened my eyes to diversity and perseverance that began my freshman year of high school. This international student’s name was Mai Kubota.…

Understanding the way context interplays with human agency is impetrative in the study of leadership. Structure is a direct correlation with context in relation to agency being directly correlated with characters. Context is not black and white it can be many things. I define context as the situational factors (environment) in which an idea, story, or event takes place that gives a deeper understanding as to why the idea, story, or event happened. My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…
