Brown And Schafft Summary

Improved Essays
- “Hating the shit out of the next town over” to me would apply to Brown and Schaffts internal structure v. external relationships. In my opinion the authors would view this as a strong relationship as it relates to “hate” of an outside town due to how urbanism has made it difficult for the local economy to survive if per se, a Walmart comes within 50 miles or so and is perhaps this cheaper alternative to local, farm grown/raised products—so I think here the hate could be from an economic standpoint from farmers and farm families. Another form of this hate that Brown and Schafft would agree could happen is a result of political inequalities. An example of this would be the next town over having more of a voice in the legislative process

I am Alexis V. Ojeda-Brown and I am a junior English and History double major with a minor in creative writing and a certificate in African American Studies at UMD. As an Afro-Latina at a PWI, I was trying to find my place on campus and I use to find myself choosing between my identities, as if they were both mutually exclusive. Once I realized that my Blackness was no less Black because of my brown identity and they were, in fact, inseparable, I was able to cultivate a better understanding of myself and a better understanding of Blackness in general. I am no less Black for being Peruvian and I am no more Black for being African-American. From salsa music to Trap music, from Tacu Tacu to Jollof, Black culture spans across the world and is different…

While the story of ‘Rocking horse winner’ covered puritan themes but with different perspective related to postmodern sense as he reworked and reshaped puritan, mythical and traditional themes into modern and psychological bent of mind and human attitudes. He discussed about current human psyche mixed with psychosexual aspect of human mind and body. Lawrence, in this story discussed about the internal psychoanalytical conflict of human beings. Interpretation of Evil and Damnation: “The Young Goodman Brown” by Hawthorne and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by Lawrence’s are more different than similar whereas both these stories demonstrated the long life fights between good and evil. Moreover, both writers illustrated the requisite of responsibility, as we are parents for looking after our children, or it is related to the moral responsibility that derived…

The Midwest, a place in the world where communities are closely aligned to one another. These small, rural communities rely on every person in order to create that community. It seems as though that knowing everyone around the small communities was what made a person successful in life. Additionally, these communities valued hard-work and honesty when it came with almost everything they did in their lives; whether it was working in the farmlands or spreading information throughout the communities about certain people to look out for, it was hard to be anonymous inside the city. Unfortunately, there are sometimes citizens that do not look forward to that kind of lifestyle.…

Bryan Stevenson’s book, “Just Mercy”, is his own perspective of what it is really like being a lawyer for wrongly convicted people in hopes of reform in the criminal justice system. After the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in 2012, many citizens countrywide was outraged at the fact that Zimmerman was not imprisoned for murdering an innocent seventeen year old. In the article “The Good, Racist People,” Ta-Nehisi Coates discusses an event which resulted in Forest Whitaker being accused of shoplifting. What could possibly be a reason to assume Whitaker, a famous actor, had committed shoplifting? From Coates’ point of view, many others want to believe that this encounter was a misunderstanding that had nothing to do with race. Whitaker was accused of shoplifting and then was frisked, based only on his appearance. Coates then goes on to claim that the owner’s apology argued that the incident was a “‘sincere mistake’ and how the worker was a ‘decent man’ who was ‘just doing his job’ ”.…

The intended goal of Brown vs the Board of Education was to integrate schools in order to provide equal opportunities to all children no matter what race or background they come from. I think that Brown accomplished its goal, but not to the full extent that it intended. Yes schools eventually did become integrated, but some children to this day are not receiving a quality education just because of the area they live in. In the movie Brown vs Board it discusses how education is still not equal for everyone. Parents either move to a different district or enroll their children in a system called METCO which takes inner city New York children to schools in the better districts.…

The movie Do the right thing opens with the song lift every voice which is the anthem for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people (NAACP), this caused me to automatically think of the rational issues being face at the time of this film, the injustice and oppression the African American people have gone through, and seem to still be going through today in the age of freedom and equality. The film then moves on to a young lady dancing to the song “fight the power”, which was a way to tell the African American communities to take a stand. The opening of the film also elutes to the system of unequal power and privilege. Chapter 8 of text has this quote, “In a democracy, the majority of citizens is capable of exercising the…

Altered Reality At some point in every individual’s life, they come across a large realization that changes their outlook on life. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” and James Joyce’s “Araby”, the main characters within these short stories both come to this type of realization, and the effects of this can be seen in how their behavior and their outlook on life alters. In the beginning of both writings, the characters are living seemingly normal, happy lives, but by the end, both characters have adopted a more gloomy existence. The way in which a sad realization affects the individuals in “Araby” and “Young Goodman Brown” are shown majorly through each story’s theme of disappointment , change in tone, and characterization of the…

In the play “A Raisin in the Sun” the author, Lorraine Hansberry, has incorporated examples of all 3 I’s of oppression. The three I’s of oppression are interpersonal, institutional, and internalized. Institutional oppression happens when one group has more power than another group and our institutions (government, schools, media..) favor the more powerful group. One example of institutional oppression in the play was when the organization tried to tell them that they couldn’t live there because they were black. On page 140 it says, “ As I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities”.…

The events that took place during Hurricane Katrina were very different for a middle class white family compared to that of the experiences portrayed in the film, Trouble the Water, of an impoverished African American neighborhood. Although the general media may only display stories of hope and praise for the people who could evacuate the New Orleans area, Trouble the Water offers a very different view, one that reveals a deeply rooted social problem that is not typically headlined. Conflict theories and Anderson and Collins’ (2004) analysis of the intersections between race, class, and gender help explain some of the events that take place in the film. Conflict theories can be used to help comprehend the alienation of individuals, groups, and communities (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2012, p. 75).…

According to the author, Brown exhibits nearly all of DSM-4’s benchmarks for bipolar disorder, including: “inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, an increase in goal-directed activities and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities with high potential for negative consequences”. His failure to consider friend’s advice, sense of a God-ordained mission and ability to go for long periods without much sleep all validate the diagnosis. Brown was also subject to spells of depression as expounded in a letter about a specific “John” written to one of his creditor’s sons, Harry Stearns. The author explains how the letter reflects a “Puritan” writing style “inspired by the Bible.”…
