Brotherhood And Friendship In Of Mice And Men By John Steinbeck

The book I chose was Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I chose this book because I have heard it was a good book and I thought it would be a good book to analyze. In this book the author developed several themes around brotherhood and friendship during the great depression some were intentional and some were created on accident. I am analyzing the book and determining whether Steinbeck intended to make certain points or not. Also I have found what he assumed that the reader already knew given that they were reading his book.
Of Mice and Men is a book by John Steinbeck that is set during the great depression during a time when the “American Dream” of owning a piece of property and being self-sufficient was something everyone wanted but

He also likes soft things like mice but he always ends up killing them because he does not know his own strength. The reason behind their traveling all the time is Lennie always does something that gets them in trouble. For example it said that in Weed Lennie saw “... this girl in a red dress. Dumb bastard like he is, he wants to touch ever’ything he likes. Just to feel it.” (Steinbeck, 41)so Lennie touched the girl’s dress and she screamed causing him to panic and hold on to it which resulted in her telling the police that she was raped. Lennie didn’t really mean to do any harm but they ended up hiding from a lynch party in an irrigation ditch until it was dark then they started to travel to their next job. One other characteristic of Lennie is he always forgets what they are doing so he doesn’t even know why they are running or why they are in trouble. George is a smaller guy but he is very witty and he looks out for Lennie trying to keep him safe and out of trouble. Lennie and George have a dream that is to make $600 and buy a piece of land and raise crops and Lennie is …show more content…
For example the impossibility of the american dream. There were many examples of this one of which was the dream that Lennie, George and Candy had of living and working on their own farm and enjoying the freedom of it. This was nearly impossible due to wages and expenses in the book Crooks the african american stable buck said “I seen hundreds of men come by on the road an’ on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an’ that same damn thing in their heads...every damn one of ‘em’s got a little piece of land in his head. An’ never a God damn one of ‘em gets it.”(Steinbeck, 72) What he was trying to say is everyone wants to have that little piece of land but it’s impossible to get it. Another example of the impossibility of the american dream was Curley 's wife 's dream of being a star which was taken away by her mother throwing away the letters and by her dissatisfying marriage with Curley. The final example of this was the dream that Crooks had even though he did not believe that it would ever happen he dreamed of hoeing the garden on Lennie and George’s farm. I believe that by showing how hard it was to achieve the American dream John Steinbeck does a good job of portraying what life was probably like during the great

The physical isolation Crooks faces suggests he is treated unfairly simply due to his race. When Crooks tries to drive Curley’s wife out of his room, he was threatened to be “strung up a tree so easy it ain’t even funny”. Her threat illustrates the difference in social status between whites and blacks. Similarly, Curley’s wife faces gender discrimination in the book. Steinback conveys this idea by not giving her a name, suggesting she is merely Curley’s belonging.…
