The practice of the presence of God for Brother Lawrence started with birth record being destroyed in a fire during the Thirty Years War in which he fought as a young soldier. It was also in the war which he sustained a near fatal injury to his sciatic nerve. The injury left him quite crippled and in chronic pain for rest of his life. We know he was educated both at home and by the parish priest. He also spent time in the wilderness living like one of the early desert fathers. He was well read even from an early age drawn to a spiritual life of faith and love to God. The determination to walk and in the presence with God without ever thinking of giving up and throwing in the towel. He was an extra ordinary soldier as a servant on the battle field to go on in the severe trials facing him on the day to day basis. Therefore, he exemplified a spiritual presence in the love of God crucifying the selfish old man and the positive will of helping other by his action of faithful devotion to the Divine Grace of God. Consequently, his faithfulness was in line with practice of the presence of God that shown by his action or willing dedication to serves as a servant. Brother Lawrence experience of severe trials and challenges in his life was soon forgotten from the fresh remembrance of his invested soul for devotion in retirement. He believes that a perfect resignation to God was a sure way to heaven. The spiritual life of our faithfulness would be doing our duty and denying ourselves and then after a time, unspeakable pleasures followed.
