At certain times of the day, there is hardly any surface movement from trout looking for a meal. They go down deep, sometimes to the bottom, searching out caddis, snails, shrimp, or other forage. Most of the time this occurs when the weather is hot or quite warm.…
I came across the crystal blue stream which was active with fish and tadpoles. I tiptoed through the creek trying not to disturb the creatures, but…
The Trout population has been fluctuating. Some people say the Trout population has been changing because of pollution, but in this essay I will explain that the Sea Lamprey are causing the fluctuation. The Sea Lamprey are causing the trout population to change negatively because of population, the lamprey are an invasive species, and they are better adapted to their environment. Firstly, the Sea Lamprey fluxuater the Trout population because the population is unstable.…
Brook trout have needs in order to survive and become fully grown fish. Brook trout have many needs in order to survive. When brook trout are in their eggs they can’t be in the light. In order to survive the hatching egg stage, they can’t be in the light too much or they can die. In order to survive, brook trout need fresh clean water.…
Boating down the Wabash River near Lafayette on July 16, I witnessed firsthand the broad, winding river’s scenic beauty, but also got a lesson in the environmental challenges the river faces when two Asian carp hurled themselves out of the water and landed in our boat. The Wabash is Indiana’s iconic river and inspiration for our state song, yet in recent years two species of invasive Asian carp have infested portions of it. These voracious non-native fish consume nutrients in the water, disrupting the food chain and threatening the native fish enjoyed by Hoosier anglers and sportsmen. At the sound of outboard motors, groups of Asian carp will jump out of the water and can injure boaters.…
The question is, “What would capture attention and be a cool and very visual way to begin a movie or a book and, more specifically, my autobiography? Stylistically, the latter is often considered to be more complicated. Besides, in the labyrinth of “opinions,” I encountered opinions that were diametrically opposed to one another, and there were even irrelevant statements, when referring to rigidity, chronology, points of view, and the choice between first- and third-person writing, between what to highlight and what to hide, and between whom to present to the reader and whom to maintain absent? (59-word phrase) These questions I already resolved forcefully.…
The Effects of Hatcheries on Wild Salmon Populations Salmonids are perhaps one of the most prominent fish in freshwater systems such as streams and lakes. Their success can be widely attributed to their anadromous lifestyle. However, despite their success, salmonid populations are on a continuous decline. Many species such as Pacific Salmon in Washington, Oregon, and California are critically endangered, while some are threatened with extinction due to several different factors (Moyle and Cech, 2004). In the wild, habitat destruction and land transformation of salmonid spawning locations have detrimentally affected wild populations.…
The month of October sees the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean push far beyond its shores. Every coastal British Columbian recognizes the seasonal dump of water from the Pacific, lifted through transpiration, which cascades onto the coastal rainforest. But, there's another part of the ocean currently surging hundreds of kilometers inland: Pacific salmon. October's Pacific rains create prime spawning conditions for wild Pacific salmon. It's also a banner month for the towering trees of British Columbia's coastal temperate rainforests.…
The tribes had felt Washington had been violating the treaties by installing culverts that do not allow salmon to move freely up streams to spawning grounds. Our salmon develop in freshwater, making a journey out to sea, returning to freshwater to lay and fertilize eggs. The life cycle of salmon has been occurring for thousands of years. Salmon are a living link to our ecosystem and our future.…
Atlantic Salmon Fishing Fishing Atlantic salmon is not like catching trout. A trout will feed day or night and when it so desires whereas the Atlantic salmon has come from the ocean strong and fat, but has not come to feed. It has come to spawn. The male joins up with the female, to create more future salmon. A place is selected in the river and becomes the nesting area.…

“The North Atlantic salmon, known as the “king of fish” for its power and beauty, is not only one of the most charismatic of all wild creatures; it is an icon of aquatic purity. It can only flourish in water with a high dissolved oxygen content, meaning that if you have salmon in your river, the ecosystem is probably in good shape: it’s a key environmental indicator”. While much of the biological abundance is gone a rich cultural heritage endures. The customs and traditions are soon going to be unable to be passed from generation to generation. What used to be an abundance of salmon it is gone and with that the chemistry of the water has…
While the hatchery does raise thousands of young fish, many of them don’t survive long enough to reproduce and the complex steps that go into their reproduction is disrupted by faulty human practices. Firstly, fish like salmon are artificially fertilized and fed food treated with antibiotics and chemicals that negatively affect the fish. Since the fish are kept in small, confined spaces, the fish become less intelligent because they live in a simplified environment. Because there is a lack of diversity in their environment, there is a negative psychological effect on the fish that makes them less likely to survive in the completely different environment of the wild. Also, since they do not live in streams, fish like salmon are unable to live with a specific scent that will guide them back home to reproduce.…
Aiza Nageeb A Fish Story Not everything in life is crystal clear; sometimes we need to dig deeper to find the true meaning behind a particular idea/thing. In the case study, "A Fish Story" a college professor is trying to teach his students a lesson by making them observe a small fish on a white plate. For three days in a row, the professor assigns the students the same assignment and as the days progress, the students find new results. The first day the students notice basic physical characteristics about the fish, like its size and the color of the plate it rests on. The second day the students use a book to find out about the type of fish it is, and the third day they dig deeper and observe minuscule details; like its weight, position of the mouth and texture.…
