Mr. Ward and his class got the privilege to meet a journalist from the newspaper. As the journalist observed the class he wrote his thoughts in an article for the newspaper. The students became a family and turned to each other whenever one was needed. At first, they judged each other because they didn’t see why they were happy with themselves.They broke away of their shyness with one another after being told by others that you are okay for being you. Your race, religion, hair texture, skin tone, origin did not matter to them. At the end of the year assembly, Mr. Ward explained to the school what Open Mike Friday was and why it was important. Tyrone was very confident in himself at this point. He decided he wanted to speak up about the class and how all of the bonds and friendships came about.
This book was heart touching to me because Tyrone stated that a black man has no chance in this country. I can relate to that because my father is a black man and with my family being biracial it has an impact on our lives. I can relate to the following quote “ I am lucky if I made it to twenty-one with all these fools running around with AK-47s.” I feel as if I would say or do something a certain way my life could get taken away.
