Three Processes
By the time an individual reaches late adulthood, they are used to developmental changes. They have dealt with this all of their lives. Selection, optimization, and compensation can ultimately lead to successful development in life. Selection is a process of narrowing goals. For example, one may wish to retire when they are healthy, because they wish to travel and spend time with their family. Enhancing the achievement of remaining goals is known as optimization. The same individual that chose to retire early, may choose to purchase a vacation house for the extended family to be able to come together more often. The systems interacting are the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and the microsystem. I believe that the exosystem and the microsystem seem most stable in late adulthood. The exosystem consists of community-based resources. An individual can feel positive or negative force when involved in this interaction. I believe this remains stable as older adults are looking for meaning and reach out to community resources for that sense of belonging. The microsystem is comprised of cultural norms, values, and laws. The remains stable as the values, cultures, and laws remain with an individual throughout their lifetime (Paquette & Ryan,
