Growing upon Bronfenbrenner’s original ecological model, this framework has been modified to better describe the patterns of health promotion (McLeroy, Bibeau, Steckler & Glanz 1988). This adaptation, named the social ecological model, redefines the fives levels of influence as the intrapersonal, interpersonal, institutional, community, and policy factors that guide a behavior (McLeroy, Bibeau, Steckler & Glanz 1988). Intrapersonal factors include individual characteristics and their developmental history. Interpersonal factors include the network of people around an individual. Institutional factors are social institutions with regulations. Community factors are the relationships among the prior level, creating a network. Public policy factors are regulated laws.
