If a people group truly is safe to be around the citizenry, they should not be dressed up by the press as innocent, nor demonized unfairly. What a broken world it must be when a moderate approach seems radical.
Immigrants, in the general sense, are not more predisposed to enacting violence or exploiting others, and in many cases the crime rates among these people are actually lower than the native population, although one cannot completely discount cultural differences in what makes up a reportable offense. However, as a nation of citizens, we should be on guard against outsiders, and deal with the crimes they may commit, in the light of justice. As a nation, we should also not be discouraged from preventing injustice by those who would label perfectly rational actions as 'xenophobic' or 'racist'.
Inevitably, there will be those amongst an immigrant or refugee population that will commit crime or violence in one form or another, and eventually this will spill over to affect the native population. Hiding their actions and covering up their sins does nothing to remedy the situation at hand. If these people truly are the same on the inside, they should be judged the same. Although it is true that this may allow some to avoid contact with these immigrants and refugees, it increases the impact that these people have on their new place of residence.
