The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” One of the biggest setbacks and failures I had faced in my life was during my high school volleyball season of junior year. The kickoff of the season was quite simple: go to practice, earn a spot to start, and play hard. After I had succeeded in earning a spot on the varsity team I actually started as a bench player thus I didn’t earn the spot to start on the court. However, at our first tournament, one our starters, Tyler, had injured himself and so I was the next in line to take his spot.…

The feeling you get when you have helped someone is one that cannot be matched. It makes you feel as though you were placed here for a reason. I have luckily felt like this a number of times, each one just as important as the next. Growing up with elderly grandparents forced me to act as a caregiver for them around the age of fifteen. I had to sort through medications, prepare meals, change bandages for wounds, and keep an eye on them when I was around.…

For the first eight years of my life I had severe lens dislocation in both of my eyes; rendering me legally blind. Living with something like that makes being a normal kid difficult. I say difficult because while most things were challenging they were rarely impossible. One of the most apparent examples of this was my introduction to music. At the age of five my mom purchased a used piano from a retired music teacher.…
