Broken Chain And Oranges: A Literary Analysis

Decent Essays
The way i would define indirect characterization is when you find out inside details about a character without them directly telling you about themselves. Gary soto uses it in the short story “Broken Chain” and the narrative poem “Oranges” to help the reader/audience get a better idea of what is happening in the story and imagine pictures in their head as they go along. Without the use of indirect characterization in both the short story and the narrative poem, Soto’s tales would have been dull and uninteresting. The audience would not have known anything personal about the characters like that Alfonso is vein and the boy in “Oranges” is low in income or poor.

In “Oranges” a 1960 love poem by Gary Soto, a theme of sacrifice is present throughout the story by using the symbolism of oranges, the fruit, to portray warmth, love and passion. The young boy understood that to be in love requires sacrifice.
