Can you imagine walking down the street and passing a sex offender? Odds are you have passed something like three in the last month. Now imagine passing a victim. It is likely that you have seen more than can even be calculated, primarily due to the fact that most victims do not report their attack. While these numbers are not prudent to my argument, I would like the idea of perpetrators and victims to ruminate in your head for a bit. Do you remember the rapist Brock Turner? It is unlikely that you would be able to recognize his name without it falling under the title, “White college kid.” The media kindly forgot to headline the word “rapists” with regards to him even while they were reporting of his court trial. Even if you do not know who he is, his case was widely popular for a few months mostly due to the fact that after he sexually assaulted a woman, his conviction landed him a mere 6 months in jail. He sure had time to brood over his mistakes, did he not? I think no. You see, this man took advantage of an intoxicated woman and left her behind a dumpster. It is not the choice of a woman to be assaulted, it was not her responsibility to avoid it, it was not her actions that suggested that was what she wanted (Rape Rate). This statement assumes that it is okay for men to behave that way without any consequences, that this is the way that they are expected to behave and that it is acceptable. “Locker talk” and “childish banter” are ridiculous excuses for the vile remarks made towards women. As well as the disrespect that accompanies the catcalls and jokes, a fear is immediately instilled into a woman’s mind that if she rejects the guy, he can attack her. The responsibility truly belongs to the men that act as if they had the right to disrespect any woman
