Every decision has consequences, and Brock Turner should have had to face those consequences even though he was a successful swimmer at a prestigious university. According to Michele Dauber, a Stanford professor and sociologist: “If you’re going to declare that a high-achieving perpetrator is an unusual case, then you’re saying to women on college campuses that they don’t deserve the full protection of the law in the state of California” (Stack). Clearly, this situation was not taken seriously enough, and further actions should have been taken against Brock Turner but were not. One of my friends was a victim of sexual assault and I have witnessed the effects of such trauma and pain. This friend was happy and loved life before she was sexually assaulted. However, she was not the same after, and perhaps never will be. She is now depressed and has a negative outlook on life. Another friend of mine experienced the death of a parent. After experiencing this loss, the friend is not the same. After pain and hurt people are not as happy or optimistic as they once were. They view the world differently, and see more of the pain it offers. Furthermore, I have seen couples go through bad break-ups that make them act vengeful afterward.
