Brock Mcguire Bands: Concert Review

The concert environment was very welcoming. The entrance into the theatre had the Brock McGuire Bands cd’s for sale and a donation vase. There were booklets about them and their culture. As you walked into the auditorium the seats were actually filled with people more than I expected. The audience was dressed regular since there was not a dress code. On stage were the bands seats with the instruments they would play beside them. The background was a bluish theme color setting the mood of the music.
The composition I like best was the second piece they played. I couldn’t really hear the name because they had a strong accent but I did hear him say “The Blue Bell’ known as the flock eared mule. This piece seemed more classical and I could actually vision a bonfire with Irish people dancing around it. One of the players actually got up and did the Irish dance with his tap shoes. Even though it was a single band the music was well enough to hear and they all played together on beat. It involved a combination of harmony with many rhythm changes.

There was a burst of energy with a fast tune. The performers were very comfortable with the different transitions throughout the music. The leader of the band did use hand movement to motion the band also.
The composition I liked least was about the fifth piece they played. It started off with a drum (barony) kind of offbeat to me and follows with the band chiming in. It was like a combo of Italian and classical music put together which did not feel like a good mixture. To me hip hop and Irish dancing isn’t a good form of

it seemed like a song almost that you would hear at a coffee shop, very peaceful song. I could definetlly see myself listening to this song while studying or relaxing. Out of all the songs played at the concert, this song was the easiest for me to spot the style of the piece. The saxophone held the chorus and was the most prominent instrument in this…

Their tempo was pretty fast at about 153 beats per minute. At bar 23, they did not drop their dynamic level to mezzo piano, which also did not create much more intensity in the crescendo. At bar 87, there was change in the dynamic level, but the alto saxophones completely ignored this and blocked out the other sections. I feel that this band had great intensity, however, some areas did not have a noticeable change in dynamics. I also think that the band did great with balance, phrasing and…

As stated before the concert was not what I was expecting. I enjoyed it more than I believed I would, it certainly isn’t my new favorite type of music, but understanding aspects of it gave me a greater appreciation for the music and the musicians. Things such as a recognizable basso ostinato set by the base player were a familiar starting point. When the soloists needed an accompaniment the bassist varied the continuous rhythm to compliment what the soloist was playing, otherwise, the beat was…

Now there were a couple songs in this but I really enjoyed the first one the best, so I focused on that song more but many of the songs are similar in there beat. This concert had four instruments all of which were string instruments which allowed for the song to flow better with each instrument. I love the sound of violin and viola together, while the cello and guitar are strumming at a lower beat than them. Overall this concert was amazing I could see and hear so much beauty through the entire performance.…

The concert that I attended was Sac State Jazz Combo with the guest artist “The Kandinsky Effect”, on Tuesday October 13, 2015 at 8:00 pm. in the Capistrano Concert Hall. In this group there were many performers with different instruments: Domenic Dalpez (baritone saxophone) , Jesse Crosson (trombone) , Aaron Smith (trumpet) , Randy Sandoli (piano) , Molly Redfield (bass) , Devan Kortan (guitar) , and Cameron Womack (drums). The songs that they played were: “Synchronous Dance”, “Untill We Meet Again”, and “On Our Way.”…

This piece was performed by the Orchestra. Moreover, it started of soft (piano) with the string family and percussion family as well. The piece was more relaxing, smooth and really good to hear. It does get louder as the piece goes on. This piece was short, however it was a beautiful tune to listen to.…

Moreover, since it was a solo performance, there was no communication among performers. Even though I could not see the performer because he was hide behind the organ, I could feel that I was putting a lot of energy in this piece to make it dramtic. Just by the way he would hit the peddles it resound in the Hall. The musical composition I liked the least was Prélude et fugue en mi mineur composed by Johann Sebastian Bach.…

This was helpful to me because it helped familiarize me with pieces and works I didn’t have prior knowledge on. The first piece the band performed was called Strike Up the Band, composed by George Gershwin. It had a fast tempo, and in some parts this made it sound like a march. The dynamics of this piece used contrast to draw my attention to certain instrument sections or melodies.…

I attended the concert of Surcari presented by Maxwell Shepherd Concert Series on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. The venue was the University of Connecticut Greater Hartford Campus. The program began with Vientos del Sur, which is traditional Bolivian song that translates into South Winds. The sheer energy of that first chord from the acoustic guitar marked the beginning of a night of beautiful cultural music.…

The instruments are all moving quickly and playing different and conflicting parts all over one another, which creates an interesting and energetic sound. I liked having this energetic and lively section towards the end of the piece. It created anticipation and excitement while listening, while also revisiting some of the initial musical sections from the first movement. I thought that the revisiting of initial musical pieces tied the whole thing together, by showing the connection through the first and last movements. I thought it was interesting that this movement ended with a downbeat, as it initially started with an…

This piece was my favorite one of the night. The sounds changed so much and the emotion that they brought with them changed as well. The music reminded me of a movie score featuring pirates and sailing ships, but then as movements changed I pictured The Hobbit. In the second movement of the first piece the woodwind instruments began to pluck their strings, and it gave me really happy thoughts. As strange as it sounds, I associated the sound of plucking woodwinds with fairies dancing in a meadow or a unicorn running through a…

This particular piece was an outlier in the performance as it’s the only one where each band member didn’t play their own respective instrument. With the next song, titled “Jubilation”, the performers returned to the instruments. Like “Highland”, this song also draws on Celtic music for inspiration. However, unlike the previous song, it also gets some of it’s inspiration from African and blues music.…
