Brittany Maynard was a young girl diagnoses with a terminal illness. She was only 29 when she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She quickly gained national attention when she decided to end her life. She was both supported and criticize for her decision to choose to take her own life by lethal self medication approved by the Death with Dignity Act.
The Death with Dignity Act is a law that has been established to allows cognitive terminally-ill adult patients to end their lives. Brain cancer occurs when there is abnormal growth of cells in the brain, resulting in a brain tumor. Cancer cells can begin from cells such as membranes or blood vessels within the brain, or develop in organs and spread to the brain. Not all tumors are cancerous, cancerous tumors are known as malignant tumors. Malignant tumors grow rapidly and spread to healthy tissue overpowering them and taking their space, blood, and nutrients (Brain Cancer, n.d. para. 2). There are more than 120 different types of brain tumors. Brittany had glioblastoma multiforme, which is the deadliest form of brain cancer. Not soon after her marriage, Brittany started to experience unbearable headaches. Her headaches were discovered to be the results of a brain tumor. Test were performed and result revealed that the brain tumor was a cancerous form Grade II Astrocytoma. Grade II Astrocytoma is a low-grade astrocytomas and are the slowest growing tumors. Brittany was given anywhere from 3-5 years with a maximum of 10 years to live with this initial diagnoses. Seventy days post-op, Brittany received detrimental news, her cancer had now changed from a Astrocytoma grade II, to a Grade IV Gliblastoma multiforme. Gliblastoma multiforme known to be the most aggressive and fatal form of brain cancer, spreads and multiplies to other areas of the brain rapidly. The average life expectancy following treatment for this type of cancer is up to 14 months. Not long after Brittany's 29th birthday, she was told she would only have 6 months to live, and her cancer would cause a slow and painful death.
