Have children changed during and after the 1800’s? Many Children Before the 1800’s were considered “unreliable”, “untrustworthy” and “immature”. Most children before the 1800’s were considered “sinful” because they had not been erased of their Original sin. Children were considered these Hurtful names because most children before the 1800’s were not respectful or even courteous of their parents. Children were actually stressing out from being rushed by their parents to become adults. Many children became very ill from all the stress. Parents wanted their children to act like adults so they could be paid more money. Children were rebelling against their parents. Children were tired of being pushed around. Children wanted to be who they are not what their told to be. Children after the 1800’s were smarter, they still worked long hours but were getting paid, they were also more responsible and mature, they were also more respectful and kinder to adults and their peers.
Towards the end of The Romantic period some Parents tried a new method of raising their children. They raised their children and treated them respectfully instead of rushing them to grow up. Children at first were a little worried about trying a new method. It was proven by many parents that it worked. If the problem was minor, they were sent to work by their parents. Small children under the age of 3 were not sent to work by the age of 5 most children were already working. If you were the age of 5 and not working it was because you had an illness or because your parents had decided that you would go to school and only smart or rich children would go to school. Children that were able to go to school ended up becoming rich. Most children did not like that their teachers were allowed to hit them. Teachers were allowed to punish “badly behaved” children with or without the parents’ permission.
Education was highly recommended in the romantic period but it was not free. If you were poor, you could not go to school unless you were really smart. If you were not smart and poor, then you could not go to school. If you were rich, then you could go to school but that was only if your parents decided to pay for it. If they did not want to pay, then you could not go to school. Children if they did go to school were not allowed to have a break.
