Brit-Ny: A Short Story

"Is Brian Ballard here?" With confused looks my history class searched each other for a response. Slowly I raised my hand, "Do you mean Brityn?" The Sub squinted down at the role sheet. "Ummm yes". Butchering my name once again, "yes Britney. Is that you?" Yep. Im here. You know how it goes. If you had a nickel for every time this or that happened to you, you would be rich. Well if I had a penny for every time I had to correct a stranger of my name. No not Brit-ney, it's pronounced Brit-tin. I would be a millionaire. But this was a new level. Brian? Really. Name and gender changed in a matter of minutes.

What's in a name anyways. For me, growing up included an endless string of nick names. Adults not wanting to sound illiterate calling

I am 17 years old and I live in Moab, Utah. This is my story. Ever since I can remember my favorite thing has been to try new things. From food to activities I have always loved to be the kid who took the dares. When all the rest of the 4th graders were squealing in disgust I was the one kid who threw the dead cricket in my mouth and chewed away. One of my proudest moments. When I first heard about the mountain bike club I was in the 9th grade and it was the first year for them. I didn't think much of it because I was already knee deep in other activities. High school was going great and I wanted to keep trying new things. As the next year rolled around some how ended up at a mountain bike practice. Looking back on it I honestly can not remember the exact reason how I got there. But now I feel I was meant to …show more content…
Last year, my second year racing, I had the coolest experience happen to me. On the Sunday before a race I had to speak in my churchs's sacrament meeting. On the days leading up to the race I worked hard and prepped for the coming race. On Saturday day of the race after setting up our pit zone two people came up to me from a team in the valley wearing U of U shirts. After asking if I was from Moab they asked me if I had spoken in my ward last Sunday. I gave an uneasy assurance that I had and asked who they were. Although I can not remember their names, I will never forget what they said. The women spoke saying how touched she was by my talk and told me it was one of the best sacraments she had ever had because of it. Quickly I pinched myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming such a fantasy. Could this be true? Had my five minute spill about faith really have been more than just an duty. For me that talk was just another thing to stress me out. An obligation that took about an hour out of my morning. I never would have guessed that I was able to impact people with so much force. Enough for them to confront me and let me know. After that experience I learned a very valuable lesson. I have grown so much. I am am powerful influence. I can do

Both Amy Tan and Firoozeh Dumas showcase heroes that have positively impacted them in their narrative essays. In her essay “Fish Cheeks,” Amy Tan narrates about her struggles of self-acceptance and the shameful actions her family presented during a Christmas Eve family dinner with her crush Robert, and his family. She also talks about the moment her mother gave her encouraging words about self-love. During the Christmas Eve dinner, Tan’s relatives licked their chopsticks and poked them in different plates of food, her father poked a fish’s cheek and yelling across the table “Amy, your favorite” offering her the piece of fish, and he later belched loudly showing he is satisfied according to Chinese customs. Even though Tan was dealing with cultural acceptance, her family was…

No matter how hard you look or how far you go, you will never find two people that are exactly the same. Everyone in this world has a different story to tell. That is why everyone should be proud of their heritage and where they came from. The poem "Depression Days" by Pat Mora, and the short story "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez both clearly stated this. They teach us to be proud of our heritage and who we are.…

GROWING UP Growing up, I didn’t have many luxuries, if any. The best thing I had was being a 5 minute walk away from a convenience store. The house I grew up in was infested with cockroaches and was falling apart within the walls. The dining room was so small, some of us had to eat on the floor. We only had three bedrooms, so my three younger siblings had to sleep in the living room.…

Currently, as an immigrant in Canada, my whole life is being influenced differently by microsystem . The greetings of the elderlies which was compulsory for me doesn’t hold sway over here in Canada at all. It is difficult for children to greet their seniors let alone greet strangers. If at all some do (greet), they do it with an annoying reluctance, as they continue to use such language as I will term offensive, given it informal nature like, “hi” to greet. Aside from this, teachers, Doctors, Pastors are called by their first names over here in Canada.…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

In “The F Word,” Firoozeh Dumas argues that being an immigrant in America is hard, especially when it comes to names. In her essay, Dumas gives people a sense of what it is like being an immigrant in the U.S. and have a foreign name; the struggle of wanting people to accept them turns immigrants to change the biggest part of their identity, their names. Right from the beginning, Dumas states that people in America need to open their linguistic horizons and give learning new sounds and names a chance.…

Whether we are Hispanics, African, or other ethnicities, our mother tongue is different than the English language. When pronouncing our name in English the accent of our name changes it is no longer our name, When English becomes our second language, our mother tongue stays with us because it is our language from culture. However, when English is our second language it is more likely to become less fluent than our first language. In Manuel Munoz essay, "Leave Your Name at the Border", Munoz mentioned ‘ 'Language is all about manipulation, or not listening to the rules ' ', Munoz means the language is pronounced differently than what it should actually be spoken. I can relate to Munoz in several ways like trying to fit in, people creating assumptions about foreign people, and how our name is pronounced.…

Dobrowski is a relatively interesting surname. Its pronunciation doesn’t match with its spelling as well as seeming like some person, long ago, threw together random letters to form a name. Although it may look as though a bunch of jumbled up letters, there is actually historical information behind it. Originating from Poland, Dobrowski “is a variant of Dąbrowski” (Geni.com 1). In addition, Dombrowski is also a variant from Dąbrowski and a variation of Dobrowski.…
