To me, being non-judgmental extends beyond the general definition of not judging on the basis of one’s personal standards or opinions. In its simplest form, non-judgmental is acceptance. It means being accepting of others and their situations without blame and condemnation. In addition, to not judge is to hold a friendly, compassionate attitude that does not criticize. Afterall, a person’s life is their own life, and they have the freedom to do be whoever they want and do whatever they want. Most importantly, everyone has something they should work on in their own life; try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and try to understand why an individual acts, talks, or dresses a certain way. In STRIPES, I can imagine a great variety of people ask for rides. Therefore, it is crucial to keep an open mind and accept the behavior of others. If not, passengers will feel uncomfortable and less likely to use this safe-ride system, inherently putting themselves in more danger. I can recall a specific night when a customer became extremely irritated by the amount of time it took us to prepare, cook, and serve his food. Unfortunately, it was a busy night and one of our ovens broke causing the wait for customers to be longer. I was taken aback by his rude behavior, but I remained calm and explained our current situation. After acknowledging that he was in a hurry and apologizing for the inconvenience, he relaxed. I knew his behavior was out of frustration so I did not take it personally. Most of the time, we can normally talk customers down and come to an agreement, but when we can’t I have learned to remain calm because in the end it will work
