Fredrick Douglass was a prominent African American who did a lot for the slaves. Fredrick was born in February of 1818 in Maryland. This man has done much for the African American community. He had a lot of adversities in his early life as well. He was also born Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey and was born into slavery. Douglass was born on a plantation where he worked for a while. He escaped his first time but was unsuccessful. He tried to escape many times before and was very unsuccessful. He fell in love with a black free woman who lived in Baltimore. And this fueled him to want to escape more and be with her. He tried to escape many times before he finally did escape and he wanted to ban slavery or at least make it so he wanted to do
