As a result, the most tense relationship at this point in the book is between Tris and Nita, as she not only suspects her of trying to seduce her boyfriend, but having some other kind of mischievous plot, as she never really says what she plans on doing with the stolen serum. The relationship between Tris and her brother remains tense, as he explains to her why he had betrayed Tris back in book 1, to work under Jeanine, but Tris is not willing to listen to his explanation and instead punches him in the face. Overall, Tris is having a rough time in this portion of the book, only being able to have meaningful conversation with Bureaucrats.
The most prominent theme in this section of the book is distrust, mainly centered around Tris, as Tobias goes behind her back to go and explore the fringe with Nita. This theme is also seen from Tobias’s point of view, as Tris does not seem to take his side on any issues, as explained in the section summary. What can be inferred from this is that the relationship between Tris and Tobias will not survive the battle between the genetically perfect and the genetically
