Lucy’s cousin, Max, was drafted to fight at Vietnam. Max’s experience there was nightmarish. Even though Max made it through the war, the vivid and terrifying experience remained in despair (Across the Universe). According to Tim O'Brien many soldiers did not fear death. Instead, death was expected and imagined during the day and darkest nights. Soldiers were desperate to leave the country. Many tried suicide attempts in order to escape the living hell in Vietnam. Like Max, soldiers just pulled the trigger aguishly in different directions. The people were invisible, but Sanders from "The Things They Carried" described the enemy presence as a "hum", a hum that hunted and manipulated the soldier’s minds (Brien, The Things they Carried pg 209). This relates to the lectures in class because according to Professor Thurmond, the Vietnam war, was a "mistake" and the war could have been "prevented" if the United States wouldn't have intervened (Thurmond, A. Lecture Notes, Chapter 14, 11/28/16). Some veterans that served during the Vietnam war still remain in silence. Some individuals were consumed with horror images that ended their lives after the war. Like in the film and the lecture class discussion, is still unknown why the war had to reach such devastation and
