2. The chorus invoke many gods because they fear the plague is too much. They claim “Thebes is like a great army dying/ and there is no sword of thought to save us” (OT 194-195). They believe that no one god’s power is enough to save them. This further proven when they scream “Come with the lightning/ come with torches blazing, eyes ablaze with glory!/ Burn that god of death that all gods hate!” (OT 242-244) They are trying to convince the gods to unite as one to help them stave off death. They graciously ask “what now, what is your price? some new sacrifice? some ancient rite from the past come around each spring?”(OT 174-176) They assume the gods will want something in return so the chorus tries to convince the gods with whatever they can.

After hearing the chorus’ prayer to the gods, Oedipus feels rejected. He notices his people have more faith in the gods than in him. He mocks their prayer by derisively asking “You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers” (OT 245). He is trying to make himself and his people believe that he is almost like a god. He wants cleos for himself and likening himself to a god is one way to achieve that. Everyone knows not to compare themselves to a god, for it will not end well.
