Between Shades of Gray In grade school to high school people are taught about Hitler, who executed more than a million people during World War II. He is said to be the most vile dictator during the war, but was he really the only vile one during that time? During World War II, Hitler was not the only one who committed the crime of executing people during that the time of war, Joseph Stalin was guilty as well. Hitler and Stalin were both guilty for tearing families apart and murdering millions of people. In the book Between Shades of Gray By Ruta Sepetys, a Fifteen year old girl name Lina and her family are torn apart and taken from their home and into a prison camp by the Soviet Secret Police on June 1941. There was one group who were sent to the Arctic Circle. They were sent there to die slowly of the freezing temperature. The “criminal” were given nothing for survival, they had to use their resources to survive. They had to work hard to be able to build shelters, and to be able to survive the abominable snowstorms located in the Arctic Circle. “That night, September 26, the first snowstorm arrived. It lasted two days. The wind and snow bellowed and blew through the cracks in our jurta. The freezing temperatures crept into my knees and hips. They ached and throbbed, making it hard to move. We huddled together for warmth” (Sepetys, 286). That night four people died from freezing, while the NKVD were all warm and well feed. The NKVD had a well built shelter compared to the “criminal.” Seeing the death caused by the snowstorm Lina starts to wonder if she and her family will be able to handle the condition.
