This book begins in a small town of the Cuban coast. In this town there are many fishers all searching for one of the greatest fish of the sea, marlin. One of these fishermen is the old man, named Santiago. For 40 days he has been without a fish and deemed “salao”, which is considered the worst from of unlucky. He used to fish with a boy whose parents made him leave the old man because they, like the rest of the town, saw the old man unsuccessful. Growing up fishing with the old man the boy helped him catch many fish. They caught some of the biggest that were ever to be seen. The old man intrigued the boy with all he taught him about fishing and sailing. Their time fishing together came to a close when nearly a whole season went by without them catching a fish. Because of this the boy’s parents required he fish with someone where he can make more profit. Since the old man didn’t catch any fish he had no money and was having to try and preserve bait. He wasn’t able to buy anything at that.
The boy one evening saw the old man sail in and went to help him carry in his mast and supplies to the shack where he lived. On their walk they talked about the fishing they had done that day. He has to physically out do nature and push himself to all the limits. He is so mentally challenged he begins to talk to himself and the ocean as if they are real people. He also talks to the fish on his journey back as if he were his only friend. “Fish, I’ll stay with you until I am dead,” (p44). He was in such agony that he was ready to die there on that boat next to that fish. The old man constantly had to think about his equipment and how far it could go.
