Victor came from Geneva, from an exceptionally bizarre family. His parents adopted a girl for him to marry when he grew up. When he turned seventeen, he went to college to study natural sciences, and eventually found out how to bring life into the world, using a corpse. He took different pieces from different bodies and put them together to create a being - a monster. Horrified by what he created, Victor fled, and when he returned, he discovers the monster had escaped. At first, Victor is hesitant and uncomfortable with the idea but eventually agrees. He goes to work on creating her, but halfway through realizes how horrible of an idea it is, thinking that they will go on to create a whole race of monsters. He destroys his progress, and the monster watches. The monster is enraged and makes the threat “I shall be with you on your wedding night” (Shelley 153). Victor goes back to Geneva, marries Elizabeth, his adopted sister. He believes the threat meant that the monster would kill him, so he leaves Elizabeth alone.
