Luther Heggs is a typesetter at the Courier Express the local paper in Kansas, but he wants to be a reporter. One night, observing what he believes to be a killing outside of an old, haunted house known as the Simmons Mansion, Heggs books it to the police station with his newly found info. Sadly, as he explains the details of his story to the Chief of Police, the murder victim walks into the room, a local drunk who had merely been knocked unconscious by his wife, who had brought him in to be locked up. The next day, Heggs stumbles downstairs to the dining room at the Natalie Miller boarding house and overhears Ollie Weaver, a full-time reporter at the newspaper, mocking Luther's mistakes of the night before. Ollie is also dating Heggs' crush.

However, he hears the old organ playing the bizarre tune again. Courageously, he runs back in the mansion and finds out his pal Mr. Kelsey the janitor, playing the organ. Kelsey, the gardener for the Simmons family, admits to being accountable for the bizarre occurrences Luther witnesse. He tells Luther that Herkie, the police officer and acting security guard, kept him from coming in the house earlier to help Luther confirm his story for the judge,and jury. Upon hearing a screech, they both go down the hidden staircase to find Nicholas Simmons holding Alma hostage. Kelsey accuses Simmons for killing his aunt and uncle for their money and leaving Kelsey's animal shears behind to frame him.Nicholas Simmons' planned destruction of the house was an effort to destroy the secret staircase that would mess up his alibi. Heggs rescues Alma by hitting Simmons unconscious with a punch from behind.
Nicholas Simmons is jailed and tied to a chair. Kelsey states the key details to the police chief and others and the case is closed. Alma takes Hegg's hand, giving thanks for saving her. In the last scene, Luther marries Alma at a small wedding. At the end, the wedding's music suddenly changes to the bizarre organ music of the Simmons' mansion.
