It is 1942, and everybody was preparing for an attack. People wanted their curtains painted black, so Hans gained a lot of business. Sometimes people couldn’t afford his services but he painted their curtains anyway. Then there is a Hitler Youth carnival. Rudy wants to win 1500, 400, 200, and 100 meter races. Rudy wins all but the 100m race. Lisel then receives a book and letter from Ilsa. Ilsa writes how she knows Liesel took the book and hopes Liesel will come and knock on the front door instead. She gives Liesel the Duden Dictionary. In the next chapter, sirens can be heard, Hans, Rosa, and Liesel hide at their neighbor's basement while Max is left behind.
