As a teenager Chiron continues to visit Teresa for food, a place to crash some nights, and sometimes some money. Even though Juan had past away, his house and Teresa were still more like a safe haven for Chiron. On his way back home, his drug sprung mother Paula comes out pressing the fact that she need money from Chiron, probably so she can get more drugs for herself. She forcibly takes money from his pockets reminding him in anger and somewhat jealousy that he is her child and not Teresa’s, due to the fact that she can take better care of Chiron than she can. Confused and frustrated with himself and his mother, Chiron visits the beach where he sits on the sand reflecting his life. He then is shortly joined by Kevin, who shares a blunt with …show more content…
This is when Terrel and Kevin recalls an old "game" called "Knocked Down, Stay Down," which Kevin was apparently good at back in middle. When Terrel tries to find a victim for Kevin to knock down, he sees and picks Chiron. Terrel pressuring Kevin into hitting Chiron, he reluctantly strikes Chiron a few times in the face and ultimately pleading to him to stay down. Chiron continues to get up, trying to prove Terrel and Kevin that he wasn’t to going to lay on the ground helpless. The courageous act of Chiron lead up to Terrel and his friends stomping him out. As social workers tries to push Chiron into giving them names of the students that assaulted him, he knew it would change nothing because its been happening all throughout middle and high school. Taking matters into his own hands is where Chiron like Marcus made a split decision that would change his life. The next day in school, Chiron walks into their class and immediately grabs a chair, when he then hits Terrel in his back, knocking him out to the ground.
