After Philadelphia, Harriet heads to New York with Mrs. Durham’s friend. She finds her daughter, but notices she is not being taken care of very well by her father, Mr. Sands who is another slave owner; however, Harriet wanted to get pregnant by him. Her owner, Dr. Flint, travels to New York multiple times to try and find her and take her back, therefore, Harriet always has to stay alert and watch her back. She ends up becoming a nursemaid for a lady who is nice to her, Mrs. Bruce, and begins to seem happy. The north is not as great as She thought it would be, she does not get served tea when eating out, she cannot sit in chairs, she has to wait on herself, but then she finally stands up for herself and demands that she be treated just like the white servants and they do start treating her with more respect. Dr. Flint finds out where she is living, so Harriet tells Mrs. Bruce that she is an escaped slave. Mrs. Bruce takes her and her daughter to Boston where they meet up with her son so they can talk to Mrs. Bruce’s attorney. Mrs. Bruce passed away, but Mr. Bruce lets her stay and watch over his daughter. The family then travels to England and stays there
