In my own opinion I believe that the Other Wes Moore has gone past the point of no return when he shoots Ray and gets arrested. “Wes and his friend traded shots and finally heard Ray scream as he fell behind a black Toyota just fifty feet from his house. Wes and his friend stopped running. They saw no movement and figured the job was done.” (Wes Moore 105) Wes stared making many mistakes as a young boy and has little chances of going back and fixing his life.…

Character narrators are a way of looking at scenes through an individual’s eyes. Using this point of view creates a more personal story, but it can also form a biased, unreliable view. By introducing a second character narrator, the reader is given a second point of view that enforces the first narrator and strengthens the story. In Three Day Road, Joseph Boyden gives two character narrators, Xavier and Niska. The present narrative is of the characters travelling down the river to Niska’s home in the bush, after Niska has retrieved Xavier from the train station, home from World War I.…

For this chapter what I found very interesting was the experiment done by Jane Elliott. While watching her video I found myself becoming frustrated with the way she was treating the blue-eyed people. I am very aware of racial issues that colored people are experiencing in our society today. I am not defending racial discrimination, but I don’t think its fair to say that white people aren’t discriminated against like black people are. Its not fair to judge a whole race of people based on one persons actions.…

Lastly, Ethan is set out to kill the Comanche leader named Scar and his followers. Throughout the film, the audience is made to empathize with Ethan and the frontiersmen because of the murder of his brother and his family. The Comanche natives are portrayed as ruthless murders who raid towns and capture innocent little girls to make them their brides. His hatred for them is made obvious when he shoots a somewhat dead Comanche in the eyes, while the group is in shocked, Ethan tells them that the spirit of the man will be unable to find its way home, therefore wandering forever. Perhaps all his hatred towards the Comanche is built on the murder of his family members.…

I Heavily intoxicated, Allric Tulzer stumbled into his first-class cabin, his stomach lurching more from the whiskey than the constant flowing motion of the ocean liner. Before boarding Olympic, he had discreetly bid those in his employ to return to Rochester; he had no need of their services during the voyage. He desired solitude and until Allric reached Southampton, that is what he expected. Olympic or Old Reliable, as the massive ship had been affectionately called after the Great War, had pulled away from the White Star piers just hours before, leaving Allric to his own devices; his own thoughts and reality at the forefront of his mind. The first thing he wished to do was forget; to burn away the burdens following him with the scorch of the steeply-priced whiskey that awaited all men in favor of strong drink in the A-Deck smoking room.…

I quietly moved to the side and whispered to the nurse, “How’s he doing?”…

On 5th April 1968 Jane Elliott conducted a classroom exercise with the objective to experience discrimination and hence curb racism. To get learning points from the assassination of Martin Luther King, she asked her 9-year-old students whether they wanted to participate in an exercise where they would judge each other by their eye colour and they consented. The brown eyed students were told that they were better and smarter than their blue eyed counterparts. Jane Elliott supported her pitch by explaining that melanin, the pigment in their eyes, corresponds to their intelligence.…

The concept of madness is an intricate and perplexing idea that is hard to understand, and even with years of knowledge and research on the topic, one can not expect to fully understand the intensity that this phenomenon can manifest itself. In Edgar Allen Poe's A Tell-Tale Heart, a man is faced with this very struggle and desperately pleas to convince the reader and possibly himself that he is in fact sane, but in his attempt, he only furthers the assumption that he is cursed with madness. The setting takes place in an unknown location where an unnamed man recants his twisted story of murder that led to his assumed imprisonment after confessing to the crime. The events that led to his confession, however, immerse the reader into the mind of…

I believe there were some ethical issues surounding the process that Jane Elliott used to conduct her classroom experience. She was creating emotional abuse and trauma to her students by making them feel inferior to the other students in the room and telling them they were not as smart and that they were not good at anything. She degraded, rejected, humiliated and isolated certain groups of children and you could see the emotional abuse written all over their faces when they were in the "discriminated" test group. Emotional abuse of a child can result in serious emotional or behavioral issues, such as depression, detachment or emotional bond to their fellow students or teacher.…

In his well-known article “Fiction and Non-fiction”, Kendall Walton introduces his theory of fiction as a game of make believe, in which representational art can be presumed as props that impose specific imaginings. Furthermore, Walton’s 1978 paper “Fearing Fictionally” addresses the paradox of fiction i.e. how can we be moved by things that do not exist in the case of fiction? The following paper will critically assess how Walton’s position in ‘Fearing Fictionally’ is related to his argument in ‘Fiction and Non Fiction’. In fiction and non-fiction, Walton’s fundamental notion is that of the term ‘representation’, which he often uses interchangeably with ‘fiction’.…
