In chapter three Vladek shares about the movement from Auschwitz and hardships they experience. At this time the Russians were closing in on the camp. The first move from Auschwitz started with giving all the prisoners blankets and a small bit of food. The prisoners were forced to walk over 90 miles to Gross-Rosen. During the journey people would fall down or walked too slow resulting in being shot. Vladek said as the night went on he heard more and more shots. When the prisoners arrived in Dachau they were housed in closed barracks lined with straw. The straw was filled with lice that carried Typhus which would infect many of the prisoners. When the prisoners were lined up for food they were checked for lice and if they had lice they were not allowed any soup for that day. Vladek says it was almost impossible to avoid lice because it was everywhere. He met a prisoner that was French. Vladek was once given a chocolate bar which he used to trade with another prisoner for his shirt. This shirt came in very handy after he washed and dried it. Vladek used this shirt for the soup line lice inspection. When it came time to get soup he would change into the new shirt and tuck the old one in his pants. He was examined and cleared for soup. He also acquired a shirt for his French
