The events of the story take on dream-like qualities because of the way the narrator describes them. “Winter Dreams” does an excellent job describing the characters with the perfect balance of indirect and direct characterization. In “Under The Snow” John Mcphee expresses the connection he has created with the bear cubs in his care. He even compared them to his own kids “When my third daughter was an infant, I could place her against my shoulder and she would stick there like velvet... Taking care of abandoned cubs in teams to help them through the winter and then placing them with mothers that are willing to take care of them. In Peter Stark’s “As Freezing Persons Recollect the Snow—First Chill—Then Stupor—Then the Letting Go: The Cold Hard Facts of Freezing to Death”, he keeps the reader constantly engaged through his use of perspective and representative writing. As he describes the different stages of hypothermia and an experience of nearly freezing to death, Stark incorporates statistics and intriguing information about the science and biology behind what the cold does to the human body under extreme circumstances. Throughout his writing, he uses the second person perspective to give the reader the point of view as if they were experiencing it firsthand. I found myself completely engaged with the article while reading it, waiting to find out what was going to happen next and what would become of the protagonist. Stark dramatically proves that venturing out in the cold in subzero temperatures is a dangerous…

In the dramatic, but sadly realistic book Wintergirls, Laurie Halse Anderson tells the story of Lia, an anorexic teenager, after her closest friend Cassie mysteriously dies in a motel room. This engrossing book is suspenseful and breath-taking as Lia and her family take on many challenges and obstacles. More specifically, Wintergirls deals with real world problems such as children actually not eating and cutting themselves because they believe it cures their pain when they don’t even feel safe in their own bodies. This story of the challenges and responses in young teeenagers provides a frequently disturbing but important look into these real-life challenges that kids may go through. I found this story to be extremely sad and a bit disturbing,…

As the assignment requires we write an annotated bibliography of a newspaper article, and since an annotated bibliography requires in-depth knowledge on the subject, I knew exactly which article to write about. This past April I performed with Shakespeare Carolina in their production of The Winter’s Tale; we received a sparkling review from Charlotte’s toughest critic, Perry Tannenbaum. Since this was such a joyous occasion for the entire cast, I knew it would be fitting to annotate this review for my assignment, as I can use my personal connection with the article to truly illustrate the content. First, I pulled the newspaper from my personal records and read it once again in order to remind myself of every detail of the article. I then critically…

I looked over and saw a buck standing there, eating the frozen grass. I started shaking, thinking that I might actually shoot something within the next 10 minutes. I grabbed ahold of my gun and got prepared to shoot. My dad told me to pick a spot for me to shoot when the deer walks there, so I pick a big oak tree straight in front of me. The buck started walking toward the tree I picked, so I put my eye up to the scope, and gathered myself to shoot.…
