The novel starts with Andy and his friends going out for drinks to celebrate their high school basketball game. This celebration soon changes as Andy crashes into a wall. Andy, Tyrone, and B.J escape but Robbie gets stuck. The car is in flames and Robbie dies. Andy blames himself for Robbie’s death. Everyone goes back to how they are and move on but Andy still feels guilt and tries to commit suicide by jumping onto traffic but his girlfriend, Keisha stops him. Andy goes to a psychologist but convinces him he is stable after a couple of sessions. Andy builds up the courage to send a letter to Robbie's parent. Rob’s parents appreciate his letter.
