Alvin York and his friends are hell-raisers in their town: picking fights, shooting tress, and getting drunk at a bar on the boundary line between Kentucky and Tennessee since selling booze is legal in Kentucky. Mrs. York asks the pastor to help guide Alvin. Pastor Pile tries to refine Alvin but is unsuccessful, although Alvin did concede that he would be open to the notion in the future. The pastor foreshadows that religion “may come like a bolt of lightning.” York is attracted to a local girl named Gracie who he wants to marry, however he thinks he needs to own bottomland before he can court her. Alvin visits a man named Thompkins, who has a piece of bottomland for sale. York sells everything he can yet he is still short so Thompkins gives him 60 days to come up with the balance.
