Brief Summary Of Alex Rogo's The Goal

The goal is a novel that tells of plant manager, Alex Rogo who is having difficulties and trying to save his plant within a time frame of three months. The problem he was facing was that, he and his team were not able to consistently deliver product on time at a cost that beats their competitors. If by three months there was no change in terms of profitability, his boss threatened to close down the plant. In his struggle to save his plant, he was sent to Houston to be on a panel to talk about robotics. On his way he meets his old physics teacher Jonah. Jonah explains to Alex that his plant was not being productive because they lost site on what is the “Goal” of any business. Herbie is a perfect illustration of a constraint in the book because he was slow. His slow nature made difficult for Alex to control the whole team. His slowness created gabs between him and the other boys in the line. Through the hike Alex learns a simple process that will help him turn his plant in the right direction. The example also highlights dependable events and statistical fluctuations. Statistical fluctuations mean that, most of the factors that are critical to operating a plant successfully cannot be known ahead of time. With dependable events if anyone project is delayed, the whole project is slowed. Thus the high inventory level that is piled up in front of NCX- 10 machine is the end product. Through non- bottleneck processes can be effective, the throughput of the entire system will be dependent on the capacity of bottleneck processes in the system. The same way if bottleneck processes delays after the non-bottleneck process higher work-in-process and excess in inventory will occur in turning the situation around we see that Alex and his team followed a procedure. They identified NCX-10 and heat- treat the plants bottlenecks. They worked to ensure that bottlenecks work at maximum capacity without losing time. For example even at lunch breaks they kept them working. They made sure everything there were doing was in compliance with the constraints. …show more content…
The book helps in giving new ideas to increase efficiency by removing the constraints from organizations systems to increase productivity. In my view I think managers in all organizations should possess these qualities: Be able to identify the goal of your company. With this you can decide on what is being productive and what is not. Anything that is working towards the goal is considered
