Brief Summary And Irony In The Epic Of Beowulf

An furious dragon has more force to be reckoned with than two jealous and revenge inspired monsters. The dragon laid at rest for over three hundred years until it's treasure was threatened, starting it's fury for humans. For this final battle, the now king, Beowulf is asked to join the fight along with several of his brave thanes to retrieve the treasure and kill the beast after three hundred years of peace, The fight is demonstrated as the most combat fought brawl out of the fights previously mentioned. In order to justify the fact that this enemy might get the better of him he insists that he wouldn't "use no sword, no weapon, if this beast/ could be killed without it" but he decides to be intelligent about the battle, so he brings forth …show more content…
There is an idea of fatal doom, in which the only good way to die would be through fighting and this is the only way Beowulf was willing to die. He persisted on with the sword that was not as much avail to him because his thanes abandoned him for dead when they realized it was a losing battle. A great warrior does not give up that easily which is why violence is heavily mentioned in this fight to show that if one was going to do down, they both would because they were both fighting till death.Though this is one battle he cannot fight on his own and needs the help of the only trusty companion, Wiglaf. Indeed with the team work they were able to strike "a little lower/...at the evil beast and his blade drove home" putting out the fire in the beast and than Wiglaf went back to finish off the job by stabbing the beast until it was no more (ln 1620-1623), Beowulf did not come out of the battle clean, netherless, he comes out bitten in the neck by the dragon. Covered in blood, he is seen as heroic and yet being on his deathbed, this just helps one last time prove that Beowulf is the mightiest warrior the kingdom has ever
