Brief Review Of Wendelin Van Draanen's 'The Running Dream'

Wendelin Van Draanen authored an inspiring novel known as The Running Dream. As a student-athlete, I could never imagine what the main character, Jessica, had to go through with a life-altering injury. Nevertheless, her persistence and exalting determination required me to hope I would react in the same way if I was put in a comparable situation. Similarly, J. K. Rowling influenced me to expand my imagination and live vicariously through the three young wizards in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The Harry Potter series is quite prominent in the realm of nonfiction and seems to leave a lasting impression on the Potterheads. Moreover, I can study the literary tactics and improve myself as a reader and writer as I move on to more advanced

While there are obvious varying differences between each any piece of literature, one commonality is constant between them: the writer has a duty to provide to his audience. Writers need to take risks with their writings to make their works memorable and complete the obligation a writer has to his reader. In William Faulkner’s Nobel prize acceptance speech, he clarifies that a writer has the “privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past” (Faulkner 5).…

Books are my livelihood. Having read the Netherfield library, in its entirety, twice, I have approached the legitimate conclusion I have acquired an infatuation with these published stories. One of my most admired and esteemed books, The Shadow of the Wind written by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, includes prodigious quotes including, “Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul. The soul of the person who wrote it and of those who read it and lived and dreamed with it. Every time a book changes hands, every time someone runs his eyes down its pages, its spirit grows and strengthens.”…

It is unsurprising for a seasoned author like J.K. Rowling to write an empowering piece; however, what is astonishing is the poignant way in which she delivered the commencement speech to the Harvard graduating class of 2008. Her speech was meant to enlighten the graduates about life after college by focusing on the benefits of failure and the importance of imagination. The commencement speech followed a topical pattern, thus she centered her speech around life after college and the equal importance of failure and imagination by utilizing her own life experiences as a mere twenty-year-old to explain her main points. Not only was the speech easy to follow because she clearly stated what she would speak about, She delivered the speech in a truly…

Successful speeches have the inherent ability to empower audiences to recognise contextual issues and deepen their acknowledgement of shared challenges and consequently influencing profound change. In light of this, speeches further achieve success when this recognition of contextual issues extends beyond the contemporary audience. Such empowerment to recognise contextual issues resonates powerfully within J.K Rowling’s notable Harvard commencement address, “The Fringe Benefits of Failure and Importance of Imagination”, whereby Rowling prompts the recognition of the importance of an individual’s empathetical imagination and advantageous failures - the underlying factors of a worthwhile life. Hence, the eventual enhancement of imagination and acceptance of failures in life that…
