The timbers were rolled into position over the pit and with one man in the pit under the log and one on top, with a large saw with handles on each end; the log was slowly ripped into lumber. This was the beginnings of the first lumber industry in Idaho. A little later Samuel R. Parkinson and Thomas Smart built a saw mill operated by an undershot waterwheel near the present residence of S. C. Parkinson. Mr. Thomas Lowe and his son T. G. Lowe built the first shingle mill in the state, just east of Franklin. The canyons were filled with good timber such as red and white pine, and they made shingles for many of the buildings and homes of the…

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…

Charles Mills was an influential philosopher who focused on the social contract in which he referred it to be the racial or the domination contract. Charles Mills used the domination contract as an outline of racial inequality and white supremacy. I agree with Mills as he identifies the problem in a society and recognizes that the foundation of modern social organization is built on the European expansion, colonization and other forms of white domination. An example relevant to the racial contract is the after effects of the residential school systems which were established after the 1880’s. This issue is relevant because there have been apologies made and attempt at compensation for the horrific event that took place many years ago.…

In On Liberty, John Stuart Mill details his philosophy, concerning the political and societal role of the individual within a democratic society. John Stuart Mill's philosophy centers on discovering the balance between liberty and authority; although Mill believes that government is necessary to foster and regulate democracy, he is apprehensive of instances in which the government infringes upon the civil liberties of the individual. Respecting the sovereignty and autonomy of the individual is of the utmost importance to Mill, and the successful progression of society. In On Liberty, Mill warns of the main threat to individuality, social tyranny, and emphasizes the importance of nonconformity to the preservation of the individual. John Stuart…

John Stuart Mill was the original punk. Now, before I lose you with the absurd image of Mill with a blue mohawk consider this, the punk subculture that emerged in the mid-1970s was characterized by an anti-establishment attitude with a vehement focus on individuality. This is not accusing Mill of being an anarchist, as so many punks were. It is apparent from his writings that he very much recognized and advocated for the necessity of a governing entity. It was, I believe, in his opinion, that government’s role was to infringe as little as possible upon the personal liberties of its citizens; while at the same time protecting these liberties from the infringement by other members of the society upon one another.…

Throughout their history, arithmetic and mathematics in general have largely been held as peculiarly separate from the physical and social sciences. This is based on the seeming certainty of arithmetic, opposed to the verifiability of the empirical sciences. This uniqueness has generated significant discussion on the exact nature of mathematical truth. The inductivists held that mathematical truths were simply an extension of empirical science; mathematical truths are simply highly probable rather than certain. Hempel defends a view known as logicism: mathematical truths are analytic truths of logic.…

The world is a vast place, filled with numerous individuals, all characterized by unique qualities. John Stuart Mill, a 19th century writer, philosopher, and businessman who placed great importance on those who find and offer new ideas, theorized that the two primary qualities in life were originality and genius. An original person is one who is independent of all others and is unique in all that they do, and someone who displays genius is unusually intelligent and creative. In “Genius and Originality”, Mill suggests that these qualities are indispensable in society since they prevent life and knowledge from becoming static, and without them, society cannot progress. He proposes that conformity is preventing genius and originality from flourishing, while freedom allows them to thrive.…

The Hayden Flour mill is a reflection of early western culture when manufacturing and agriculture was prevalent in the United States and in the state of Arizona in particular. Every nation has a developing stage when manufacturing is central to the economy of that particular nation. Now, the United States is developed, and factories have become relics of the past. The flour mill on Mill Avenue (hence the name mill Avenue) is a perfect example of this. The fact that the flour mill is surrounded by more modern looking buildings is an illustration of the idea of economic progress and modern liberalism--…
