Can’t Pay Me Enough The overwhelming part of having a job as a fully-grown working adult, besides having to spend all your money on bills, is having to put up with the worst types of people simply because you desperately need a paying job. More aptly put, because that worst type of person is usually put in a position of power over you. In the short story “A&P” Sammy had to make a decision, though probably based majorly on his lower half rather than his actual brain, to quit his job due to a strong belief that his supervisor treated a customer unfairly. Sammy was lucky being young means most likely he is without a lot of bills. The Author, John Updike, so easily conveys the setting and era in which this story was written.…

While reading short stories, narrators provide insight and point of view to the reader. Specifically, I think Sammy the narrator from “A&P” and the 12-year-old boy narrator in “The Secret Lion” have good amount about each other to compare to one another. In “A&P” the narrator is Sammy who is a 19-year-old boy who is a cashier at a local supermarket. While the 12-year-old boy who is the narrator in “The Secret Lion” is just a middle schooler who is getting caught up in all the big changes that occur at that age. While the characters differ in age, you can still relate by how they act towards their current situations.…

In A&P, written by John Updike, the main character Sammy works at an A&P grocery store in a small town. Based upon his outlook, Sammy is presented in the story as a person uninterested in his life and seeking a change. After three girls are belittled for wearing bathing suits in the store, Sammy is displayed as tired of his closed-minded boss and the customers. As a result, he decides to quit his job on a whim, demonstrating Sammy’s immaturity and carelessness. Although it appears that Sammy has only a single motivation behind this bold decision—to get the girls’ attention—when closely analyzed, Sammy’s description of the customers and his attitude towards the store reveals to the reader that he has been fed up with this lifestyle long before…

In John Updike’s story “A&P,” the reader is brought through a casual summer day of work at a store named “A&P.” The story is told by the perspective of a normal young worker, Sammy, and he brings the reader through the rather boring lifestyle of a cashier at a convenience store. On that specific day, there are three beautiful girls who walk in the store wearing clothing that was against the clothing policy. At first Sammy, as well as all the other employees, was enjoying the sight and taking it in as much as he could. After multiple instances with coworker and the three girls, it is shown that Sammy is the protagonist over the the shoppers, co-workers, and manager Lengel.…

Araby 1a. While reading the story "Araby," the theme of innocence is one that I picked up early on. From what I understand, the girl in the story seems to be the very first girl, or at least one of the first, that he is interested in. Since he is not very experienced with these emotions, his actions reflect that. For example, he states that he would wait every morning watching her door, and when she came out he would quickly follow her.…

In the literary analysis over "Araby", "The Structure of 'Araby'", author Jerome Mandel uses a multitude of outside sources to support his main idea: "Araby", similar to others in this genre, are structured to be like a medieval romance through the usage of a certain pattern. This pattern consists of enfance, an introduction of the damsel who clouds the main character's vision, commitment to the quest, obstacles that need to be conquered to succeed, and completion of the quest, in that order. Throughout this analysis over "Araby", Mandel goes through the story chronologically, and at the same time going through the specific events in order, to show the structure of "Araby" is that of a medieval romance. To start, the author states his thesis: Joyce structures his short story to be that of…
