Bridges Classroom Observation

Improved Essays
We arrived at the Bridges Foundation, Inc. at 7:15 AM and we had the chance to observe the arrival of most of the students. The students together with their caregivers are warmly welcomed by the guards of the school. They all look excited for the day.

There is nothing extraordinary in the exterior of the building. It looks like any other public school but once you step inside, you’ll see the difference. The discipline instilled in the Bridges community is admirable. The whole facility is neat and clean. The caregivers are patiently waiting on the benches and on there is a simple playground and an area for garbage segregation. Art projects created by the students are displayed on the walls and it goes to show how well-loved and talented the students are.

Inside the classrooms are approximately 5-6 students with at least one teacher, one teacher aide, and one caregiver. This maximizes the learning in the classroom. The SPED teachers are energetic and are able to keep an eye on all of the students. The rooms are filled with materials that encourage discipline, camaraderie and learning. The students are also provided food, so they can ensure that they will eat healthy foods while inside the campus. Everything in this school is geared towards the goal of mainstreaming the students to the outside world.

Like this foundation, it started from a mission, then it grew with the help of the parents, the teachers, the sponsors etc., and now it is a reality. It has already helped a lot of person with disability be better and achieve something. It may not be their dreams, but something is still better than nothing. I also learned a lot of techniques on how to make a session more fun but educational, and how to manage students with behavior

For the past four years I have had the pleasure of working for a Non-Profit Organization named Seven Hills Foundation. It was created in 1951, by a small group of parents of disabled children, sharing the same vision. That vision was to advocate and improve the lives of their children while providing support to each other when needed. Since that time, Seven Hills foundation has flourished into one of the largest support networks for individuals with life challenges. Seven Hills Foundation has an organizational culture that appeals to many people.…

The school is laid out in a convenient manner with the offices, gym, library, and cafeteria fairly close to one another and not integrated into the class room area of the school. This keeps areas that may provide noise or distraction from interfering with a child’s classroom experience. Also the grades were somewhat separated and grouped together. The younger children's grades are located on the ground floor which is easier then having a young child walk up the stairs multiple times every day to reach the library, cafeteria, or classroom.…

The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment.…

A schools ethos should always be reflected in the working practices of the staff. The schools ethos may be very clear, but it should also be apparent from pupilsâ€TM and staffsâ€TM day to day practice and behaviour. - Children should be valued in the school and there should be a culture that their learning and development is celebrated in a variety of ways. My child observation and classroom observation took place at the Mt. San Jacinto Child Development and Education center in the preschool/pre-k (ages 36 months to 54 months) program room. This classroom has 2 teachers and 15 children in attendance during my observation. My study child is a male student age 4 who for this assignment I will refer to as C. The classroom environment as a whole can handle the children within the program, however I will provide a better picture of the entire room to have a clear picture for reflection. As a child walking into this classroom you feel a sense of warmth of both the environment and also from the teacher as she greats all her children individually.…

All teachers performed great jobs at creating a unified classroom of learners. The students have favorable moments to act as chiefs and helpmates with individual responsibilities; their jobs are placed in a pocket folder on the wall. Students could participate in classroom activities in a variety of ways. Ms. Atkinson, Bell, Waldoky, and Gullekerson used a rocking chair during their teachable moments. I noticed around the classrooms, the teachers modeled supportive interactions with the students, and encouraged prosocial behavior.…

The social justice issue that I chose to write about is that of the education gap. There are huge discrepancies in the learning experiences among students who are supposed to be getting “equal” education. By this, I mean to say that depending on where an individual resides, the schooling provided might be completely unbalanced. I have seen this firsthand because I have gone to a number of different schools. One of the biggest problems surrounding this issue is that it continually perpetuates a cycle between those with affluence and those without, ultimately lengthening the gap.…

My experiences throughout the time of my volunteer practicum gave me an overall positive experience by developing my knowledge, skills, and abilities in adapting physical activity programs for those with varying abilities. In addition I learned valuable lessons and strategies for improving physical activity, and the importance of inclusion. Reflecting back this is essential moving forward in to my career, as it serves as a tool kit to resolve problems or create solutions I may encounter. Furthermore the friends, and contacts I made from the club will continue to grow and inspire me in my practices, allowing me to grow and develop further in my understanding of abilities, rather than disabilities. Looking back I would participate more freely…
