Bridges Activity Plan

Idea(s) to be Emphasized: Bridges are important for transportation. They are usually made to get cars or trains over something, such as, a body of water or busy roads. Bridges have to be built so they can withstand a great amount of weight, so they can hold people, trains, and cars that travel over them.
Description of Activity: We had the wooden blocks at our station and different types of paper, such as, regular flimsy paper, cardstock, and construction paper. We had the paper cut to the same width as the blocks, so they could lie across them, forming a bridge. With these materials the idea was to have the children create different types of bridges with the weaker paper and the stronger paper. Then we had miniature plastic cars and people

Was everything for the activity set up before the children began to arrive? If not, what could have been done to better prepare so that the activity was ready to be implemented as soon as preschool began? Yes, everything was set up before the children began arriving. My group members and I built a bridge the children could look at to better understand exactly what our activity was, hung up pictures of bridges, and set all the materials out for the children to begin playing at this …show more content…
What considerations were made when setting up the activity in order to smoothly implement the activity? For example: How was the space used and defined? Were the materials thoughtfully selected and prepared? What did you do to make the activity appear engaging? What considerations were made so that children could work as independently as possible? Make a suggestion for any change in how the activity was set up that would better facilitate the children’s participation in the activity. My group requested to be at the block station in the North lab. We needed adequate space for each child to have the chance to create their own bridge and not be crowed by other children. The materials we chose were thoughtfully selected. I think it was great that we chose to have the plastic cars and plastic people at our station so the children could drive the cars and walk the people over the bridges that were created. Ahead of time we built a bridge and put pictures up of bridges to make the activity appear more engaging and interesting. My group decided to build a model bridge ahead of time and put pictures up of bridges, so the children could independently build one. Some suggestions I would change after going through this experience is to put more wooden blocks out for the children to use and to bring more sturdier papers that would make a stronger

The four stages are: Birth – two years - sensorimotor stage, two years to seven years – preoperational stage, seven years to eleven years – concrete operational stage, and eleven years to fifteen years – formal operational stage. This paper will address a classroom designed to benefit the development of toddlers who are in the preoperational stage (Lefrancois, 2012). Children in the early preoperational stage are extremely egocentric; that is they are unable to think about things from any point of view but their own (McLeod, 2010). Toddlers believe that everyone else sees, feels, and thinks the exact same way as they do.…

On November 7th, 1940, the Tacoma Bridge collapsed into the Tacoma Narrows straight in Washington State. The bridge connected the town of Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula, and was one of the first major suspension bridges in the western United States. Unlike other suspension bridges constructed around this time, the Tacoma Bridge failed to withstand wind speeds over 40 miles per hour, due to unequal stress on parts of the bridge. The construction of a suspension bridge must include geometric shapes and and have some sort of symmetry to stay up.…

With the assignment of this Truss Bridge project, our primary objective was to design a sturdy bridge, with the durability to withstand the heaviest load over an allotted time span using limited materials, yet cost efficient. To participate and qualify in this project, we must comprehend the guidelines and statutes to avoid disqualification. The criteria and constraints will contain specific and precise measurements of a length, width, and height pertaining to either the roadbed or bridge. Although with these strict regulations, there are a few areas left questionable; such as: how does this method of testing differ to the other method from past years and how do we evenly distribute the work amongst the four members of this group? Each member brainstormed and designed 6 truss bridge models, determined their top 2, and reasoned why their particular design was best.…

A beam bridge or known as a girder bridge, is a bridge structure that consists of horizontal beams spanning supported by pillar at each end of the deck. The weight of the beam including the structure itself, plus any load it carries are supported by the downward force into the pillars. The beam bridge works on the principles of compression and tension, where on top of the bridge bends, it undergoes compression and at the bottom it is subjected to a horizontal tension. Therefore, the bridge must be designed to resist buckling and bending of the weight of itself and the loads it carries. Most beam bridges are made from concrete and steel beam because of their properties to withstand the forces of compression and tension.…
