Why Burn This Bridge? If children aren’t allowed to read stories about negative topics, then are they guaranteed that these things won’t ever happen to them? Children must be taught right from wrong, so that we can make good choices in our own life. Stories and characters help us learn about these things that we sometimes know nothing about. I don’t think the book, ‘’Bridge to Terabithia’’, should be banned just because it shares a story that deals with real situations that might be difficult for children to process, such as offensive language, witchcraft, and death. Many people believe this book uses unacceptable language that shouldn’t be used in a children’s book. In the story, both Jess and his father, use the phrase “Oh, Lord’’ several times. Some people feel it is wrong to call on God unless you are praying. Consequently, this phrase is often used by people in the south when expressing how they feel. The juvenile fiction author, Karen Hirsch, comments in an article, “the language …show more content…
I think Terabithia was an imaginary place for two kids to play outside carefree. Some of the characters did use distasteful language that I know not to use. These words could be taken out of the story and it would still be a great. Children use their imagination to play and have fun. Terabithia helped me remember what it is like to pretend while playing outside with your friends! Death is hard to accept, but is part of life. We lost a teacher at our middle school this weekend, which is proof that you cannot decide when a life will be taken. People of all ages and at various times can be taken away from us. I learned about how we face many challenges in our life and we shouldn’t take anyone for granted. Other kids will really miss out on an adventurous story if they do not have the opportunity to read this

People have to realize that back in the days that the book was wrote that it was a word that was used regularly. Mark Twain wanted to cause racial tension with the book, he wanted the “hurtful” and “injurious” words to actually feel emotion. Forcing any sort of author or anyone to conform to the social norm of the politically correctness of today’s society is wrong. It’s also teaching the students who know that racial words were used in the past and that sexual expression is a real thing that they need to hide…

For thousands of years, books have entertained and educated the masses. To ban a book is downright unjust in the way it forbids a person to communicate their thoughts, as well as restricts people from enjoying a piece of literature. Books as a whole are excellent teachers, and show another face to the world, and should not be banned. Moreover, the banning of books infringes on the freedom of speech and the freedom to read.…

Books end up on the censored or banned list because are reported to have content that is believed to be harmful to the reader. For children’s books, many complaints are made by parents who think the content of the book could harm their child’s mind or may be an inappropriate topic to learn about. Some of the main complaints are made due to: religion, sexual orientation, political views, violence and “obscene” language. Goosebumps should not be banned because it contains no offensive language and the central character never dies, the protagonists can be both male and female, they can contain good moral lessons for children and promote family values, the books depict protagonists escaping doom with their own wit and ingenuity, and young readers love simple language and easily-followed yet engrossing plots. Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…

Although both articles discuss the problems and dangers of banning books, they do so in different ways. They use many of the same techniques, but with different approaches. In "Is Harry Potter Evil?", Judy Blume makes many points about why censoring books is wrong.…
