DiCamillo, Kate. Because of Winn-Dixie. Candlewick Press, 2000. Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie is a story of a young girl, Opal, who moved from one small town in Florida to another with her father who was a preacher. Her mother left them when Opal was very young and she struggles with this throughout the book. While in the supermarket, Winn-Dixie, Opal found a dog that was tearing apart the store. She claimed the dog as hers and she and her father took the dog home. She named the dog Winn-Dixie because of where she found her. Winn-Dixie helps Opal create friends in the town and realizes that she has people in her life that care about her and would do anything for her even though she does not have a mother in her life.

Vanderpool, Clare. Moon over Manifest. Delacorte Press, 2010. Summary: The main character in the book is Abilene Tucker, a girl who lived in 1936. Her father sent her to a small town called Manifest, Kansas while he worked a railroad job somewhere else. A pastor took her in, and in that house, she discovered a box of momentos and letters stashed away under a floorboard. After investigating the letters Abilene matched some of the stories that she heard from her father involving the characters Ned, Jinx and Miss Sadie. In the end, all the stories weave themselves together into a happy ending. Abilene learns that Jinx was her father and helps Miss Sadie by uncovering her past. Activities:

Summary: The story is about a cheerful fellow in a yellow jumpsuit and receives the narrator’s good wishes and leaves town. He travels far and wide seeing the new landscapes of the world. At one point he gets stuck in the Waiting Palace where everyone is just waiting. (For anything!) At another moment the hero is riding on an elephant back with a victory banner flapping overhead. This fellow faces up to each challenge and extricates himself from each slump only to succeed.
