Brian's Winter Character Analysis

There was a plane crash and a teenage boy survived it, but now he has to figure out can he survive his first winter in the wildernest. In the book Brian’s Winter by Gary Paulsen, a boy that used to be in the city has to survive the winter in a forest in Canada. Brian has to learn different ways to hunt to keep him alive even though he does not like killing animals. Brian has to use everything around him to stay alive in a very cold winter. It is a good thing Brian is intelligent.
Brian remembers things from when he lived in the city that help him out in the forest. Brian’s gun broke a little bit before winter started. He had a couple of arrows but they weren’t the strong type and weren’t the easiest to use. He remembered when he was back in the city going past a sport store that had bows and arrows but he couldn’t remember the the tip of the arrow was made of at first. Then he remembered. It was flint. He had to go and find flint and when he did he made some pretty great arrows. After making these arrows he tried hunting with them. One of them was able to get him some very lucky kills. When is started getting colder Brian knew he had to build some sort of shelter otherwise he wouldn’t last through the winter. He thought of the Native Americans and their teepees. He decided to build something like a teepee but he also built it like Beavers build their dams. He made sure it was airtight with sticks and mud like beavers. This shelter protected him from the cold and animals who couldn’t open the door but he still had his dangers, like the bear. The bear could smell the meat he had and of course wanted some to but not peacefully. Brian thought he was dead meat but his skunk friend Betty sprayed the bear and saved Brian.
