This is demonstrated by Brian, primarily when he visits Gale in the hospital. He explains to Gale that he needs to beat Gale and Gale needs to be at his best. Brian explains that whenever he has been the best in the past, someone else has come along and overshadowed him, taking away from his achievements. He explains that by earning the starting spot by beating out Gale, he would have earned the job by being the best and that he would finally be disprove those who doubted him.
Gale demonstrated his need by explaining to Brian, earlier in the film, that he did not come to the Bears to be friends with anybody. He did not want to be anybody’s friend either. He came there to play football and he felt that people made a big deal of him being black or being good and they only saw his color or his talent. He went on further to say that he did not care to make relationships or friendships with people who did not see past what he was or what did to see who he was as a person. Gale maintained relationships based on affection and not so much based on inclusion.
