Brianna Chapter Summary

Brianna first strength is that she enjoys reading, which is indicated within her reading attitude survey, the family survey, and teacher’s comments. Brianna also understands the basic concepts about print as she is able to identify parts of a book as indicated within her reading attitude survey. She is aware of directionality, and word boundaries as well as upper and lowercase letter names as evident from the running record. Brianna second strength is narrative comprehension. This is evident when reading through the running record and referring to the teacher comments. Brianna discussed the story with the teacher. She was able to retell the story. She remembered many details. Brianna was able to answer most of the questions the teacher asked her related to the story. While Brianna has many strengths, she is not a fluent reader. She lacks speed and intonation as indicated within the running records summary. Referencing the running record, Brianna reads slowly, at 53 words per minute. Although she was …show more content…
I would attack Brianna’s issue with speed by having her practice repeated reading with a familiar book with easily decodable words at her independent reading level. I would have Brianna read the same book 3 times daily until she was reading the book fluently. Once she had mastered that specific book, I would introduce a new book and repeat the strategy. It is proven that repeated reading of a familiar book at an independent reading level will boost speed which will help Brianna to become a more fluent reader. Fluency is essential if Brianna is going to be able to read to learn. Comprehension is hindered when a child is not a fluent reader. Spending too much time on decoding will leave no brain space for comprehension. The benefit of this activity is that repeated reading will help Brianna to read quicker which will indeed help her to become a more fluent
